An Introduction to Qingdao University



Study at Qingdao University

Qingdao University is situated in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, China, between the Yellow Sea and Mount Fu. It is a fusion of rich local culture and modernity.

QU was founded in 1909. In 1993, it merged with Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Textile & Engineering College and Qingdao Normal College. Years of continuous development have transfomed Qingdao University into an comprehensive university with diverse disciplines and excellent facilities. Currently Qingdao University ranks among the top institutions in Shandong province, and ranked 401-500 in Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2019 and 2020. In 2021, it was listed among the top 100 Chinese universities. The University Hospital has been ranked among the top100 hospitals in China for six consecutive years.

The university is comprised of 34 colleges and Faculty of Medicine, with 79 undergraduate programs, covering such disciplines as literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, education and art.  It offers over 10 postdoctoral positions, 14 Tier 1 doctoral programs leading to 3 types of doctoral degrees. There are 41 Tier 1 postgraduate programs leading to 28 types of master’s degrees, covering 81 academic fields. The current enrollment of the university totals over 41,000 students, including over 10000 postgraduate students and over 600 international students.

The university values the unique contributions made by international students and recognizes the importance of international exchange programs covering both students and teachers, as well as joint training with universities worldwide. International collaboration and exchange have always been a powerful drive for the university’s development, growing at a fast and steady pace over the years. QU has established more than 200 exchange and cooperation projects with over 180 universities and institutions in about 30 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The university was approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to admit international students in 1987. In 2004, it was designated an Education Center for Chinese Language and Culture by the State Council. Approved by Office of Chinese Language Council International, QU is also an HSK test center, and international students can apply for Confucius Institute Scholarship, Chinese Government Scholarship and Shandong Government Scholarship. MOE also designates the university as an ‘Exemplary Base for Study in China’.

The College of International Education of QU has an excellent teaching staff, most of whom hold CTCSOL (Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages), and modern teaching facilities. The College of Chinese Language and Culture provides courses designed for international students, whether they are on a degree program or studying the Chinese language.


The College of International Education provides the following Chinese-related programs:

1. BA in Chinese Language: Students with high school diploma and who have passed the HSK Level 4 are eligible to apply. The duration of study is four years. Upon completion of all required courses, students will be awarded a Graduation Certificate and BA in Chinese Language.

2. Dual-degree in Chinese & Business: Students with high school diploma and who have passed the HSK Level 4 are eligible to apply. The duration of study is four years. Upon completion of all required courses, students will be awarded Graduation Certificates and BA in Chinese Language and BA in Business

3. General program in Chinese Language: The College offers courses of Chinese learning at 8 levels starting from elementary level to advanced level. Special course such as Oral Chinese, Tourist Chinese, Business Chinese, and Chinese Culture can also be organized upon request. Language classes usually take place in the morning and afternoon classes are available in Traditional Chinese Calligraphy, Painting, Music, Kung fu and Tai chi, etc.

4. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: Those who wish to become professional teachers of Chinese are welcome to enroll in a special two-year program. This program focuses on the teaching of written and spoken Chinese to non-native speakers. Confucius Institute Scholarship is available for this program.

Faculty of Medicine of QU is recognized by the World Health Organization and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Qingdao University is also among the list of the first universities authorized by China’s Ministry of Education of to enroll international students to study clinical medicine.


In 2006, Qingdao University started a 6-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science Program in English. Since the program’s inception, hundreds of international students have enrolled, many of whom come from countries such as India, Thailand, and Nepal.
